Police raise awareness of livestock theft

A pamphlet issued by the SAPS to residents during the campaign also offered important tips to farmers and stock owners on how to avoid stock theft.

To curb the rising numbers of stock theft-related cases, the police in Meyerton with various stakeholders, carried out a stock theft awareness campaign. The event took place on Tuesday, November 21.

During the vent, SAPS accompanied by the Meyerton Rural Safety unit, Social Crime Prevention members, and the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens (CPWs) embarked on the crime awareness campaign and visited farms, and residential areas in the Meyerton area.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Police spokesperson Constable Tlaleng Moloi says: “The campaign was aimed at creating maximum awareness around stock theft. We encourage farmers to brand their stock for identification purposes and not to buy stolen livestock.”

A pamphlet issued by the SAPS to residents during the campaign also offered important tips to farmers and stock owners on how to avoid stock theft.

“Implement and maintain a livestock register, report all stock theft incidents immediately, brand mark all your livestock according to the Animal Identification Act, and report all stray animals to the police.

“We also encourage farmers to report cases of stolen stock to their nearest police station. We ask that community members work together with the local SAPS and Stock Theft Units,” Moloi concludes.
