Vanderbijlpark pensioner’s TV stolen while she watches favourite show

Three armed men broke entry at Rickie Roux's home, stole her TV while she watched and went mum, then fled the scene.

VANDERBIJLPARK – What was meant to be a normal Sunday for Ouma Rickie Roux turned into a scene reminiscent of a movie crew documenting a fictional break-in.

This situation unfolded when three African males forcibly entered Roux’s home in Vanderbijlpark, heading straight to the living room where they swiftly dismantled a 42-inch TV and a laptop while she was leisurely engrossed in watching Monk.

Shaken and unable to speak, Roux sat on her favourite couch until the perpetrators exited the house.

The audacious act occurred while Roux’s husband was resting in the bedroom, his response delayed by Roux having removed her trousers.

Meanwhile, Roux’s son, Teuns, secured a safety burglar separating the kitchen and living room from the bedrooms, encountering the trio during their escape.

In an interview with Ster South, Ouma Roux recounted the incident, explaining that they had just returned from a local butcher when the robbery occurred.

“I took a moment to rest before cooking the meat we had bought and decided to watch my favourite show. I remained unfazed during the robbery because I wasn’t expecting anyone. The thief continued with his business as if I wasn’t there watching the same set he took,” she said.

Teuns provided his perspective on the incident, stating that when he heard a loud noise, he went to investigate and encountered the trio in the passage.

“One was in the kitchen snatching the laptop, another was busy in the living room, and the other was on guard. I quickly locked the burglar, grabbed the mop, and started hitting the man who was on lookout. He struck me with a crowbar before I managed to wrest it from him and repeatedly threw it at him until they fled,” he explained.

Teuns further revealed that after distracting the men, he woke his father before pursuing them. “As I followed them, one was already waiting on the other side of the palisades; they handed him the TV, jumped the wall, and fled in a white vehicle.

I’m just relieved that it took my dad a long time to dress up; otherwise, we might be discussing a different story,” he remarked.

Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu, spokesperson for the Vanderbijlpark police, confirmed that a case of House Robbery had been opened, but no suspects had been arrested.
