Former SA boxing champion without ID for 14 years
"When I explain my situation, they become suspicious as if I’m a criminal."
SEBOKENG.- Former SA Junior Welterweight Champion, Aaron Kabi has been without an ID for the past fourteen years.
Kabi said an attempt to get a new ID after he lost his identification document in 2011 has been frustrating. He told Sedibeng Ster that he has been sent from pillar to post by the Vereeniging Home Affairs for the past fourteen years.
“I don’t know what to do because I don’t get any help from Home Affairs and this is frustrating me. My daughter has been sending communication to Home Affairs to ask them what is the problem for me to get a new ID but they have no answers. I use a driver’s license if any matter requires an ID. I don’t know what to do anymore because I thought I did everything they required when I applied for the new ID.
“In some places, they will demand ID when I produce my driver’s license, and when I explain my situation, they become suspicious as if I’m a criminal. They have the right to think I am a criminal because, without an ID for fourteen years, it is hard for anyone to believe,” said Kabi.
Kabi is one of the local former boxers who put Sedibeng on the map as the best boxer. He is still much involved in the development of boxing developing upcoming boxers in Zone 10, Sebokeng.
*Sedibeng Ster is following up on this matter with the Vereeniging Home Affairs Department.
