Senior citizens remain anchors of society

Mthombeni said it was important for him to give back and make the event a success as a way to show that the rights of elderly persons will always be upheld.

MEYERTON – The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has shown the elderly people of Gauteng that they remain anchors of society. Mthombeni carried out an elderly person’s engagement at the Meyerton Townhall on 12 February.

He was joined by the Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho and Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole. The event was attended by scores of elderly people from both the Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni Districts.

During his keynote address Mthombeni said that the elderly play an important role in society, adding that that is critical that they are well taken care of.

“It is critical to care for the elderly as they form part of the vulnerable groups of our society. Your safety and wellbeing is of utmost importance.

“I know you have a lot of questions today and some of the stakeholders have already responded to your concerns.”

Mthombeni said it was important for him to give back and make the event a success as a way to show that the rights of elderly persons will always be upheld. He took time to tackle some of the issues raised by senior citizens who came in numbers filling up the Town Hall to capacity.

During the engagement, some elderly people were allowed to raise questions about some of the issues they need to be assisted with.

Various departments were in the vicinity to give the senior citizens education about their rights, finances, health and services.

The day was filled with fun for the elderly who were able to sing, dance and be happy. Mthombeni showered all his senior guests with gifts.
