VALENTINE SPECIAL: Couple celebrates 60 years emjolweni

Umjolo is one unfriendly life stage for youngsters, however for Jwili and Meisie Mazibuko, they are just cruising nicely in this department.

SEBOKENG – While umjolo (relationships) is showing born-frees and ama2000 flames, one grey couple is cruising nicely in that department.

Having endured tougher times and harsher circumstances, they are still idling in their 60 years of love.

Meisie (79) and Jwili Mazibuko (83) from Sebokeng, Zone 7 will be celebrating six decades together on March 1.

Because February is the month of love, Ster chose to feature the duo in a tell-it-all interview to give the troubled young some know-how on this new age pandemic suffocating relationships, marriages, and piece jobs.

Speaking to the paper during an exclusive interview, finishing each other’s sentences on questions asked, Meisie said patience has always been the centre of their kinship.

“We met years ago when we used to help his [Jwili’s] grandmother with chores because she stayed alone. We would prepare fire for her, clean her house and yard among many other things. One day, Jwili’s uncles proposed marriage to my family, that’s how we used to do it,” she said.

“I was later taken into his family through ho shubedisa (The practice of abducting young girls and forcing them into marriage), later we went to sign and that’s how our marriage came about,” explained Meisie.

Talking about issues they have faced in their marriage, Jwili said he was troublesome like any other male gender in kinships.

“I used to drink alcohol, which is one of the contributing factors in destroying marriages. But when my wife talked me through that phase, I had to change to maintain peace and keep our relationship smooth sailing. We used to sit and discuss issues, no matter how bad things were. We never ran out of our marriage because it’s something we always wanted,” he said.

Continuing with factors believed to be the biggest destroyers, both Meisie and Jwili agreed on ‘lack of patience’ as another factor killing relationships.

“Today’s generation experiences break-ups because they are not patient in love. Love is a hard phase of life, which needs nothing but patience,” emphasised Meisie.

“Without patience, no love will stand and we will continue seeing young people falling out of marriages and relationships,” added Jwili.
