VEREENIGING – A suspect in his 30s is in custody following his arrest on July 14 at the Steelpark truck stop.
According to police, Essential Infrastructure Task Team members received a tip about the suspicious truck.
Speaking to Ster, Vereeniging police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane said their officers pounced on the truck while performing their routine patrol.
“Essential Infrastructure Task Team members received an anonymous tip-off about a truck that was loaded with baby formula that was suspected to have been stolen.”
“Upon arrival, the members spotted a white truck with a trailer that fit the description of the truck in question, and when inquiring about the loaded merchandise, the driver could not account for or produce paperwork,” she said.
Mokhachane said the baby formula company was contacted on the discovery.
“The company identified their property and confirmed that the truck that was on scene was unknown to them. They further added that the truck that was transporting their merchandise was hijacked in Cleveland,” she said.
The man was arrested on the spot.
Meanwhile, Vereeniging Station Commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba extended her sincere gratitude to the members for acting swiftly and would like to thank the community members for their continuous efforts in assisting the police with anonymous tip-offs.
