VANDERBIJLPARK – SAPS in Vanderbijlpark has opened a case of culpable homicide following the death of an unidentified woman who was struck by a vehicle on the Golden Highway near CW5 and Bophelong on 13 August.
According to police reports, the victim was wearing grey denim pants, black boots, and a dusty pink jacket.
Emergency services responded swiftly, but paramedics declared her deceased at the scene.
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu stated that the woman had reportedly been crossing the road from the Joko Tea informal settlement side when the incident occurred. The vehicle involved was travelling in the direction of the N1.
“We have opened a culpable homicide docket and investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” Sigcu said.
Eyewitnesses described the event as deeply distressing. Thabiso Zwane (32), who was travelling on the same road, said: “The road is very busy, and accidents do happen, but this was very traumatic to witness. I heard a loud impact and saw the woman on the road, struggling to breathe. Moments later, we learned she had passed away.”
Community member Zakhele Mokoena (38) expressed concern over the ongoing issue of non-functioning traffic lights in the area, which he believes contribute to speeding and pedestrian fatalities.
“Since the robots stopped working after vandalism, accidents have increased. These lights are used to slow drivers down and improve pedestrian safety,” he said.
Police are appealing to the public to assist in identifying the deceased and locating her family. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Vanderbijlpark police station on 071 675 7246.
