A fire farewell for fire chief

Metsimaholo Local Municipality number one firefighter has retired after decades of service.

SASOLBURG – A farewell fit for a fire boss. Having spanned over three decades, James Mkhanazi, a dedicated fire chief in Metsimaholo Local Municipality, has retired from the service, rolling up the fire hose.

Chief Mkhwanazi’s career began in 1991, when he took up the role of ambulance assistant at Ngwathe Local Municipality.

Even in those early years, his passion for service and his devotion to his community shone brightly.

Driven by purpose and a heart to serve, he moved to Matjhabeng Local Municipality in 1996, where he answered the call to become a firefighter.

With each passing year, his reputation as a disciplined and hardworking leader grew.

By 2002, he had already risen to the position of Station Officer, a role that allowed him to lead others with both skill and empathy.

His leadership journey continued when he was entrusted with the responsibility of Divisional Officer for Training, where he poured his knowledge and experience into equipping the next generation of firefighters.

Later, as Assistant Chief Fire, he further demonstrated his ability to inspire, mentor, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in fire and rescue services.

In 2016, Chief Mkhwanazi’s path led him to Metsimaholo Local Municipality, where he assumed the role of Chief Fire. Mkhwanazi led his team for nine years, demonstrating integrity and dedication while guiding his department with wisdom and courage.

Now, as he retires, the Metsimaholo community pauses to reflect on his extraordinary legacy.

In a statement issued by the communications department, Dr. Gino Alberts said, “His unwavering commitment, his countless sacrifices, and his tireless pursuit of excellence will continue to inspire long after he departs from active service.”

“Chief Mkhwanazi’s life is a living testament to what it means to serve with honour, and his impact will echo through the lives of those he trained, those he saved, and those he led.”
