Community warned against rising theft and hijackings

Police in De Deur raise alarm over spike in vehicle theft targeting Savanna City neighborhoods

DE DEUR – Savanna City residents are warned about increasing motor vehicle theft in the area. As a result, police in De Deur are urging residents to take precautions by securing their yards and guarding their vehicles.

Police spokesperson Constable Mampho Mahlomola says in circumstances where residents do not have a lockable garage or park their vehicles next to their bedroom windows, extra security mechanisms must be installed.

“Parking your vehicle outside with no lockable gates and a garage is risky, and it attracts criminals. Most vehicles being stolen are those parked outside garages and have no security mechanisms installed.”

The warning for residents to take precautions follows the theft of a white Ford Ranger, which was placed under a carport.

Meanwhile, De Deur SAPS has issued a cautionary warning to motorists using Grasmere Road and R557 to be vigilant when traveling on those roads.
Mahlomola urges motorists, especially those driving Toyota vehicles, to be extra vigilant when approaching stop signs and humps.

“Do not forget to close the windows and lock the doors when you are stopped by cars that you are not familiar with. Proceed to a safe environment, be it a filling station or the nearest police station, especially at night.”

Mahlomola states that police in De Deur have intensified visibility by means of patrols in the area to curb criminality and reduce hijackings.

Motorists are urged to report suspicious vehicles roaming the area and any suspicious activity on the road by calling De Deur SAPS on 016 590 9200 or by alternatively contacting the Crime Stop hotline 08600 10111.
