SEDIBENG – In what appears to be a case of “blink and it’s gone” at the Sedibeng District Municipality, vehicles are disappearing despite being parked under the watchful eye of security guards.
Ster has learnt that at least five vehicles have reportedly been stolen from the municipal precinct. Three of the missing cars belong to the municipality itself, while two are private vehicles.
The ease with which the cars were taken has sparked rumours of an inside job and poses serious questions about security at the troubled offices.
Political parties are crying foul, and residents are questioning just how safe the municipal parking lot really is.
ACDP regional leader Sello Mokhele expressed deep concern after a municipal vehicle was reportedly stolen in broad daylight.
“This is not the first time a vehicle has been stolen from the Sedibeng municipal parking lot,” Mokhele said.
Mokhele has warned that the thefts could soon become the new normal if urgent action is not taken. What has upset residents most is the lack of information coming from the council offices.
According to Mokhele, the council has yet to receive a security report on the matter, while the municipal manager has allegedly gone radio silent.
Ster has contacted the municipality for a statement regarding the security breaches and the missing vehicles.
At the time of publication, the newspaper was still awaiting a response to these media enquiries.
