SASOLBURG – Entries are officially open for the 31st Sasol Sasolburg Marathon, happening on March 28.
This much-loved event, famous for its flat and fast route, is a major Comrades qualifier and is expected to draw more than 3 000 runners from across South Africa and beyond.
Sasol, the proud sponsor for over three decades, says the marathon has become a unifying annual tradition that brings together elite athletes, weekend warriors and the Sasolburg community.
The race starts at the DP de Villiers Stadium and winds past iconic local landmarks, including the Sasol One Site and Highveld Garden, as well as some of the town’s most scenic residential streets.
One of the highlights every year is the waterpoints: Sasol employees, local businesses and community groups go allout with themes, music and enthusiastic support, turning them into lively minifestivals that keep runners motivated throughout the route.
Race day kicks off early, with the marathon and half marathon starting at 06:00, the 10km at 06:15 and the fun run at 06:30.
Prize-giving takes place at 10:00 inside the stadium, where top male and female finishers in all distances will be rewarded with cash prizes, along with category winners.
Runners can enter the 42.2km, 21.1km or 10km races online on Entry Ninja until March 25, with late entries available the day before and on the morning of the event.
Entry fees range from R50 for the fun run to R320 for the marathon, and the first 500 online entries will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
Athletes aged 60 and older enjoy a 50% discount on all events except the fun run. Cut-off times range from one hour for the fun run to six hours for the marathon, and every finisher will receive a medal.
ID is required at registration, and all prize money will be paid electronically, so athletes must provide banking details.
Sasol is calling on residents and road users to support the runners and co-operate with officials on the day.
They also extend thanks to the Sasolburg community, local businesses, volunteers and partners who help make the event a highlight on the regional sporting calendar.
