Varsity students released on bail amid murder charges

Five university students accused of murder have been released on bail after a court heard how a street encounter and a failed romantic approach tragically turned fatal.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Five female university students accused of murder have been released on R1 500 bail each following a formal hearing at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court earlier today.

The accused, Masego Tswai, Nomathemba Motlomelo, Bonolo Motsela, Katlego Machobane and Tebello Finger, appeared in full view of parents and friends before the court. They are facing a Schedule 5 murder charge in front of family members and friends.

During the proceedings, investigating officer Daniel Mokone told the court that the incident began when the deceased and his cousin encountered the five women and a man in Vanderbijlpark.

According to the victim’s cousin, a confrontation broke out after the two men approached the group and tried to propose to the women. A fight allegedly ensued, during which the deceased was stabbed in the neck.

Although the State maintained it has a strong case with witnesses directly linking the suspects to the crime, prosecutors did not oppose bail.  The court heard that all five suspects have verified addresses, no previous convictions, no outstanding warrants, and are students at North-West University

Presiding magistrate Norman Wessels granted bail of R1 500 per student with strict conditions, ordering them to report to their local police station once a week and avoid any contact with witnesses.

Wessels also issued them with a stern warning.

“I urge you not to put yourself in harm’s way. You should err on the right side of caution. Being released on bail allows you to prepare for a case,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs said:  “This is a police matter, and we cannot comment on it. All internal processes against students have already commenced. All matters where our students have allegedly made themselves guilty of offenses are viewed in a very serious light, and should they be found guilty, they will have to face the consequences.”

The murder case has been transferred to the Regional Court, and the five women are due to appear again on November 24.
