WATCH: ‘City of Potholes’ gets a makeover

Major road repair works are underway in the Emfuleni Local Municipality thanks to a road rehabilitation project headed by the Gauteng department of roads and transport.

VEREENIGING. – The Gauteng Department of Roads has embarked on an ambitious project to rehabilitate over 40 roads in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

The project, which will be done in two phases, kicked off in Three Rivers, Ward 1 of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, earlier in February, with repairs to Golf Street and Umgeni Street. A total of five roads in this ward as been identified for repairs.

The project will also extend to other roads in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

The executive mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, cllr. Sipho Radebo, and ward councillors conducted an on-site inspection of repair works corner of Umgeni Street and Limpopo Street.

The project is undertaken by the Gauteng Department of Roads.

Radebe says: “At some point we were called the city of potholes. So the province has responded to that, because they wanted to help us and other municipalities in the municipality. We appreciate the decision the premier took.”

According to Radebe a resolution had been taken at a council meeting in 2022, but there have been numerous delays with the project.

“We would like to appreciate the patience of residents…This has taken longer than expected but by the 20th of March these roads must be done. Judging by the pace these contractors have been working, that goal seems attainable,” Radebe said.

According to the executive mayor feedback from the community regarding the road works being done has been mostly positive, although there has been some complaints about road markings.

Radebe explained that proper road markings would be completed after three weeks to give the materials time to settle.

The project entails rehabilitation and resealing of roads.

“At some point we were called the city of potholes. So the province has responded to that, because they wanted to. We appreciate the decision the premier took,” Radebe concluded.
