Down memory lane for Mathe
“I must say when I received a call to be part of Celtics legends, I felt special to see that those people still value my contribution at the club."
BOIPATONG – Solomon Mathe was a member of the ex-professionals who formed part of Bloemfontein Celtics Legends team that played against Kaizer Chiefs legends in Bloemfontein this past Sunday.
Chiefs and Celtics legends played as curtain-raisers for the Inaugural Toyota Cup showdown between Kaizer Chiefs and Young Africans. Amakhosi lost 4-0 in front of their fans, who packed the venue to capacity as always. However, Chiefs beat Celtics 2-1 in the legends game with David Radebe and Siyabonga Nomvethe on score sheet. It was a galaxy of stars in display with notable names from both sides.

Kaizer Chiefs brought all their favourites such as Doctor Khumalo, Jabu Pule, Brian Mathe, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Mandla Masango and Willard Katsande. Celtics also called in their big guns in the form of Timothy Batabaire, Moses Spandeel, Kleinboy Taaibos, Shub-Aib Waters, Mark Manyambela, Thabo Nthete, David Modise, James Madidilane, Ditheko Mototo, Musa Nyatama and Benjamin Reed, who was the team’s coach.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, this Boipatong born former midfield maestro said he was honoured to be part of this special occasion, playing with and against his former teammates. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that it was a wonderful trip down memory lane.

“I must say when I received a call to be part of Celtics legends, I felt special to see that those people still value my contribution at the club. Celtics was the best team in South African football especially those in the stands. I really enjoyed my time with Celtics and the club will always be close to my heart. I want to thank those who initiated this, as it brought back great memories especially playing against Kaizer Chiefs legends. We all know what the atmosphere was like when Kaizer Chiefs played against Bloemfontein Celtics in Bloemfontein – everything used to come to a standstill,” said Mathe.
