SEBOKENG. – Zone 11 community members enjoyed a day of education as the Etelang Pele Community Service and the Khulisa Organisation hosted a Disability Awareness event recently in commemoration of Nelson Mandela month.
The Disability Awareness event took place at Maranatha Church in Zone 11, Sebokeng on Friday, July 26. The purpose was to teach people about disabilities and make them aware that it does not mean people with disabilities don’t deserve love, respect, or care. The community members, guests from organisations, parents and people living with a disability attended the event to learn more about different disabilities.

In an interview, Mpho Molakeng, the Director of Etelang Pele explained the need of attending such workshops:
“Disability awareness helps in subsiding the stereotypical mindset of society. Etelang Pele Community Service provides vast opportunities for everyone to get involved in creating a positive, inclusive society for all. Therefore, disability awareness focuses on educating the society regarding disabilities and how we as individuals can bring about the necessary changes.”
Khulisa Organisation’s mission is to teach people about different disabilities. Learning acceptance is fundamental to enable an understanding about people with disabilities at home, school, workplaces, and in health institutions.
Melusi Nhlapo, a board member at Etelang Pele, said “We often see discrimination towards people with disabilities and it can lead to undesirable outcomes for communities as a whole. Therefore, for a better future, we must try to minimise the discriminating culture and promote disability awareness through platforms for each and every individual, so that the foundations of empathy originate and helps in breaking social barriers.”
