On the brink of disaster: Gauteng’s water crisis
There is a looming water crisis for residents of Gauteng.
The last few days of rainy weather have been welcome, but much more rain is needed.
Vaal Dam is currently only about 33% full.
TLU SA (Transvaal Landbou Unie) has expressed concern following recent warnings from Rand Water about the critically low water supply and the 42 leaking reservoirs in Johannesburg.
The lack of proper maintenance of water sources and infrastructure has not only caused a shortage of water but also has a negative influence on the quality of the water that is made available to the community.

This can not only have economic consequences but also serious health risks for the general public.
TLU SA makes an urgent appeal to the Department of Water and Sanitation to:
Make money available for the repair of water and sanitation facilities: This includes the recovery and maintenance of leaky reservoirs, the renovation of pipelines, and the improvement of the existing water supply systems.
Improve transparency and communication: The community must be informed about the progress of the repairs so that they can understand what is being done to alleviate the current crisis. This includes the need to recognise historical failures and advocate a systematic evaluation of water allocations.
Consider long-term solutions: It must be a priority to develop a sustainable water management system that not only addresses the current problem but can also prevent future crises.
The community has an urgent need for a clear plan of action and accountability from the government.
TLU SA is prepared to work with the department and other parties to find practical solutions.
“It is of crucial importance that immediate action is taken,” says TLU SA. The time to act is now.
