Women going to work riding bicycles

“Where we come from, as women, we use bicycles as a form of transport to go to work."

VANDERBIJLPARK. In the past, it was unusual for women to ride bicycles. However, recently, it has become normal for them to do so.

Sedibeng Ster encountered several women in the morning riding bicycles to work.

To make it interesting, some of them were even carrying babies on their backs. Sedibeng Ster spoke to some of them and most are foreign national women. They told Sedibeng Ster that where they come from it is normal for women to ride bicycles, unlike South African women.

“Where we come from, as women, we use bicycles as a form of transport to go to work. It has nothing to do with our culture. We don’t see anything wrong with this, but I know that in South Africa people are surprised to see women riding bicycles. South African women don’t ride bicycles unless it’s for sports-related reasons. I hate to say this but South African women are spoiled and most of them drive fancy cars,” said the woman who only introduced herself as Ayana.

She told Sedibeng Ster that she’s been living in Vanderbijlpark for the past three years and that to survive, she could do anything that men do even gardening.
