Solar lights bring hope to Azania community
Mashoai said the installation of lights in the area made a big difference as members feel safe walking through the streets that are no longer as dark as they used to be.
SEBOKENG – The Men’s Forum formed by male community members of Azania informal settlement just next to the Golden Highway in Sebokeng is determined to eradicate elements of criminality in their community.
Recently, the group of men embarked on a project of buying solar lights and installing them in main streets known to be crime hotspots.
Speaking to Ster North, Katiso Mashoai said that the initiative has helped lessen crime in the area.

“There are people in the community going to work in the early morning while others go to work late at night. After receiving numerous complaints that there were robberies happening during this time, we took it upon ourselves to install these lights.”
Mashoai said the installation of lights in the area made a big difference as members feel safe walking through the streets that are no longer as dark as they used to be.
Patrick Sekgobela said they have also taken it upon themselves to conduct cleaning campaigns in the area.
“We have taken their initiative to do our own grass cutting and cleaning campaigns. We are determined to set a good example so that others can see that it can be done.”
“We are committed to bringing a change in the community and we are making things happen ourselves. We want to show the community that it can be done so that they can also unite with us to embark on greater projects.”
