Get ready for Vaal River City Marathon

The man who is behind this brainchild is none other than former SAFA President Dr Molefi Oliphant, who needs no introduction in the world of sport.

SEDIBENG.- The Annual Rand Water Vaal River City Marathon is scheduled to take place at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark, on September 14.

Approximately 5 500 participants have confirmed to take part in this year’s event, with runners all over the continent expected to line up at 06:00 in the morning at the venue.

Rand Water is the main sponsor of this big event.

There is so much at stake to run for apart from prize money at the end of the race. The runners will also use this platform to qualify for the two significant events on the sports calendar: the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon. This race attracts high-profile runners across the country.

Every year at this time, Vanderbijlpark comes to a standstill, and residents can expect traffic jams this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) when the participants arrive in this region. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Dr Molefi Oliphant said they are ready and looking forward to the big day come Sunday.

DISTANCES: 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km, 5km Fun Run/Walk

The Vaal River City Marathon is also used as a platform to drive Emfuleni’s tourism, sport development, and economy. The Vaal River City Marathon is one of the biggest participating sports in the country. The man who is behind this brainchild is none other than former SAFA President Dr Molefi Oliphant, who needs no introduction in the world of sport.

He has been running this Vaal River Marathon successfully for the past few years. His experience in sports administration cannot be compared.
He is a par excellence sports administrator, especially in football. This country hosted a successful 2010 World Cup under his leadership. He is not a non-starter when it comes to organising big sports events. He proved this with the 2010 World Cup.
