Police crack down on cable theft in the Vaal

The cable was confirmed to belong to Transnet.

MEYERTON – Police in the Vaal have stepped up efforts to combat cable theft, arresting several suspects in separate operations this month.
On August 4, two men were arrested in Meyerton after being found in possession of stolen cables and a wire cutter. They were apprehended by members of the local security company AfriGuard and are expected to appear in court soon. In a separate operation on September 3, a team comprising the Sedibeng Infrastructure Unit, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and private security companies raided an unregistered scrapyard.
Five undocumented foreign nationals were arrested after police recovered copper cable worth approximately R3m.
The cable was confirmed to belong to Transnet. The suspects face multiple charges, including possession of stolen infrastructure, dealing with second-hand goods without a license, and contravening the Immigration Act.
Police say investigations into both cases are ongoing, highlighting a broader effort to protect essential infrastructure in the region.
