1st Annual Izangoma Carnival Festival a resounding success

Many expressed hope that the festival will become an annual highlight on the cultural calendar.

SEBOKENG.- The spirit of tradition, unity, and celebration came alive this past weekend as the 1st Annual Izangoma Carnival Festival unfolded with vibrant energy, drawing enthusiastic support from sangomas and the broader community alike.

Held for the first time at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Zone14, the festival brought together traditional healers (izangoma), cultural performers, and community members in a powerful celebration of African spirituality, heritage, and healing practices.

With colourful attire, sacred rituals, song, dance, and a deep sense of togetherness, the event highlighted the rich cultural tapestry that izangoma continues to preserve and share. Organisers expressed immense gratitude for the turnout and positive reception.

“This festival is not just about celebration, it’s about restoring pride, passing down sacred knowledge, and giving thanks to the ancestors. We are overwhelmed by the love and support from both sangomas and the community,” said the event coordinators.

Attendees enjoyed traditional drumming circles, ancestral dances, spiritual consultations, storytelling sessions, and stalls showcasing indigenous herbs, crafts, and cuisine. Elders and young initiates stood side by side, symbolising the living continuity of cultural traditions. Community leaders applauded the initiative, noting its importance in preserving indigenous knowledge and fostering respect for traditional healing. Many expressed hope that the festival will become an annual highlight on the cultural calendar.

The overwhelming success of the first edition has already sparked excitement for next year’s event.

“This is just the beginning,” said another organiser.

“The ancestors have spoken and the people have answered.”

Sefatsa Matsemela (Baba Ntandoyedlozi Mbatha) from Impande Yakwa Ngwane Ndabezitha at Bophelong said, “I want to thank everyone who participated and supported the event, even though it was difficult. Next year same time, same place.”
