VAALPARK – SPAR Bean Tree, in collaboration with Lavazza, awarded Lesego Maphike from SUPERSPAR Vaalpark as the national winner of the 2025 Bean Tree Barista Competition.

This prestigious annual competition, designed to empower, educate, and refine the craft of coffee-making, highlights SPAR’s ongoing commitment to excellence and continuous learning within its in-store coffee experience.

This year, 87 talented baristas participated nationwide.

The regional finals took place during the five SPAR Regional Tradeshows in August and September, where competitors showcased their expertise in espresso preparation, cappuccino artistry, and the creation of innovative signature beverages.

A panel of four sensory judges and a head technical judge evaluated competitors on flavour, presentation, and technical skill – ensuring the highest standards were met.

The 2025 competition also introduced new technical challenges, reflecting the growing sophistication and professionalism of the Bean Tree barista community.

SPAR proudly congratulates the regional champions: Siphokazi Faku (Eastern Cape, SUPERSPAR Village Square), Lesego Maphike (Inland, SUPERSPAR Vaalpark), Flora Molapo (Lowveld, SPAR Sonpark), Ameer Gool (Western Cape Distribution Centre), and Slindile Mkhize (KwaZulu-Natal, SPAR Express Mvoti).
