Midvaal community unites in 16 Days of Activism

Community march reinforces Midvaal’s commitment to ending GBV.

MEYERTON – The Midvaal Local Municipality’s Social Development section, led by the MMC for Community Services, councillor Mary-Anne Myburgh, in partnership with Meyerton SAPS and the Department of Community Safety, recently carried out a 16 Days of Activism campaign.

Held under the theme “Addressing the root causes of GBVF, promoting positive masculinity, promoting gender equity, and creating economic opportunities for women and children,” the initiative fostered a strong message of unity, safety, and accountability within the community.

The event drew support from various stakeholders and residents, who joined a march from the Sicelo White House on Bell Road to the Sicelo Community Hall in a collective effort to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV). Community members gathered at the White House, standing together in solidarity before embarking on a walk through the Sicelo area to highlight the urgent need for safer homes and communities.

A moment of silence, reflection, and release was observed, honouring survivors and victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

MMC Myburgh, GBV coordinator Sergeant Seipati Mohlapholi, councillors, and residents also signed the “Midvaal Stand Against GBVF” pledge, committing themselves to actively oppose all forms of GBV and to promote a culture rooted in respect, protection, and dignity for all.

Police spokesperson Constable Nompumelelo Zazini emphasised the importance of such campaigns, noting that they play a vital role in the ongoing fight against the scourge of GBV.

Zazini also extended appreciation to all stakeholders for their collaboration and dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the community.

“It has been a very long year, and I would like to say thank you to all the stakeholders for the wonderful work they did working together with SAPS for the benefit of the community,” she said.

Midvaal further extended its gratitude to every resident and partner who took part in the campaign and continues to champion the fight against GBVF.
