Gerald Mtshali, a loyal servant of this beautiful game!
“I have a lot of respect for Bra J, and I am who I am because of him. He helped me grow as a player and now as a coach."
SEDIBENG.- In the world of football, loyalty is a rare find.
But for Gerald ‘Backos’ Mtshali, it is a way of life.
Sedibeng Ster Sport recently took a closer look at the remarkable journey of one of football’s most dedicated servants.
With Jomo Cosmos now playing their ABC Motsepe League home games here in the Vaal, Sedibeng Ster Sport has been following the coaching career of Mtshali, sitting side-by-side with his former coach Jomo Sono on the bench. The two have come a long way, and their relationship is less like colleagues and more like father and son.

Today, Mtshali serves as the club’s long-standing assistant coach.
Back when Cosmos was a powerhouse in top-flight football, Mtshali was one of the team’s standout players. While many believe he was unlucky never to earn a Bafana Bafana cap, especially considering Cosmos was a famous feeder to the national team, his contribution to South African football remains certain.

His loyalty and commitment to this club are something to marvel at, especially his passion for this beautiful game. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mtshali said he enjoys every moment working side-by-side with the man affectionately known as Bra J.

“I have a lot of respect for Bra J, and I am who I am because of him. He helped me grow as a player and now as a coach. He is very passionate about development, which is why we have such a young, exciting team in the ABC Motsepe League,” said Mtshali.
Jomo Cosmos has officially made the Vaal their permanent base, playing their home fixtures at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark. For the local community, Mtshali’s presence is a gift; his humility and vast experience are exactly what the next generation of players needs to succeed.
