Midvaal Streets safer after joint police operation

Joint police operation in Midvaal leads to 44 arrests and the seizure of over R126 000 in illegal goods.

A massive joint police operation in Midvaal has resulted in dozens of arrests and the seizure of over R100 000 worth of illegal goods as authorities ramp up the fight against lawlessness.

Led by Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Integrated Service Delivery Operation brought together the SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police, and local metro units to reclaim the streets.

The operation saw roadblocks across major routes, including Meyerton R42, Mooilande, Meyer Street, the R82, R59, Kliprivier, and De Deur. Officers set up co-ordinated roadblocks and stop-and-search points to address reckless and negligent driving, non-compliance, unroadworthy vehicles, and illicit goods operations.

Beyond the roads, the operation moved into the heart of the community. Teams conducted school searches and social crime prevention exhibitions to promote awareness and safer learning environments.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, police Spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela said a total of 44 suspects were arrested for contravening the immigration act. Nine spaza shops were also visited for compliance inspections.

The Department of Community Safety reported 69 citations valued at R46 800, while counterfeit goods and contraband items, including illicit pharmaceuticals, valued at R126 000 were seized.

Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni highlighted the swift response by the police regarding a case of a hijacked Renault in De Deur, which resulted in a shootout between the officers and suspects.

Three suspects from Eldorado Park were subsequently arrested, and two unlicensed firearms used to commit the crime were confiscated. Mthombeni commended community members for working with community patrollers and the police, emphasising that effective crime prevention requires strong partnerships between law enforcement and residents.
