Human Rights Day Basketball Tournament

Every year, people gather in Sharpeville to remember those who lost their lives.

SHARPEVILLE.- Local schools are set to take to the court for a special Human Rights Day Basketball Tournament at the Tshepiso Sports Complex on March 21.

The event, which was announced to Sedibeng Ster Sports by organiser, Pinky Machobane, will feature U14 and U18 boys’ and girls’ teams competing throughout the day.

The tournament is being held to commemorate a significant and somber day in South African history. On March 21, 1960, 69 people were killed, and 180 were injured when police opened fire on a peaceful crowd protesting against the Pass Laws.

Every year, people gather in Sharpeville to remember those who lost their lives.

This year, basketball will be a key part of those memorials.

“We would like to invite the Sharpeville community, young and old, to come and commemorate this day with us. It is not only about playing but also part of education to teach these young people about their history,” said Machobane.
