Nhlapo wins Best Teacher Award in Sedibeng

Sebokeng educator Mantobi Gladys Nhlapo has been recognised for her dedication to holistic education, winning first place in the Sedibeng District Best Teacher Award. With over two decades of service, she continues to uplift learners both inside and outside the classroom.

Sebokeng teacher Mantobi Gladys Nhlapo has been recognised for going the extra mile in her career, ensuring diligence and excellence in the subjects that she teaches.

On February 19, Nhlapho was recognised by the Sedibeng District East and West, garnering first place in the Best Teacher Award category. In October 2025, Nhlapo came out third in the same category at the provincial level.

Born and bred in Sebokeng Zone 7, Nhlapo launched her teaching career more than two decades ago, gearing her life’s purpose towards educating an African child. Nhlapo specialises in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Technology, Tourism, Mathematical literacy, and Life Orientation. However, Nhlapo’s interests do not only lie in academia.

“I’ve always been a very enthusiastic teacher who participated in many professional development programmes and extracurricular activities. This includes awarding learners who participate in different sporting codes, debate, public speaking, and beauty pageants.”

Nhlapo says her objective is to motivate the kids, taking into consideration that not all learners are academically gifted.

This stems from the strong belief that other learners will make it in life through sports and be exposed to the global community.

Nhlapo cites that at her previous school, she was a caregiver to 50 learners who were orphaned and vulnerable. Nhlapho also assists learners who do not have birth certificates and identity documents.

“I was teaching and assisting young ones in my community over weekends and during school holidays, long before I became a qualified teacher. Education opens doors that seemed impossible to access, opens up opportunities to obtain skills and knowledge that will never perish. Most importantly, education can change the narrative of your family background.”

Nhlapo says she feels ecstatic about garnering the first position in the category, as it challenged her to the core.

“This category was so intense because it was focusing on being a teacher holistically, and the contribution one makes inside and outside the classroom. Winning the National Teaching Award is my biggest achievement as a teacher. This is a moment I will always cherish.”
