SEDIBENG.- Tshepang Moremi scored in his first Soweto Derby when Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 in the Betway Premiership League match at the packed FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
This Sharpeville-born forward lived up to expectations as one of the players expected to dominate this derby.
This Soweto Derby is regarded as one of the biggest derbies in the world.
Sedibeng Ster Sport predicted that Moremi and Relebohile Mofokeng, who come from the same hometown, would be among the players on the starting lineup for Pirates. Moremi’s name will be included in the history of South African football as one of the players who scored on their first derby.
Pirates walked away with the derby bragging rights, with Amakhosi’s faithful leaving the FNB Stadium with their tails between their legs. Pirates were unstoppable going forward with Moremi and Mofokeng leading up front on attack. Chiefs had no answers on how to stop the Sharpeville-duo who enjoyed the freedom of the FNB Stadium.
Vaal soccer fans were part of 87 436 supporters who packed the venue to capacity to support their local heroes.
Meanwhile, back home, there was a hive of activity as part of this Soweto Derby, with 9EightEight hosting a tournament for ex-professionals at the Boipatong Stadium earlier on the day. After the tournament, they hosted these players to watch the Soweto Derby on the TV screen.
It was a jam-packed venue.
However, there was a disappointing moment for soccer fans who came in large numbers when the venue experienced technical difficulties during the game. But this didn’t hamper the spirit of those at the venue.
The local soccer fans painted the venue in black and gold, and black and white.
Eventually, the power came back with the score 2-0, much to the delight of Pirates supporters.
The venue erupted when Pirates scored the third goal, 3-0.
