Four arrested for murder of an alleged  rapist

A rape case docket had previously been opened against the deceased and was still under investigation.

SEDIBENG. – The Orange Farm police have arrested four suspects after a man was killed in Poortjie, Orange Farm last Wednesday.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Shaan Motsapi said that on Wednesday, May 20, at approximately 11:20 the police responded to a complaint of mob justice (vigilantism).

Upon arrival at the scene, police found the a 38-year-old man lying on the ground with open head wounds and multiple injuries across his body as a result of an assault, during mob – justice (Vigilantism).

He had allegedly raped young boys

“An ambulance was summoned to the scene to provide medical assistance. However, the victim was declared dead on the crime scene. It is alleged that the deceased was assaulted by community members following allegations that he had raped young boys,” Motsapi said.

It was further established that a rape case docket had previously been opened against the deceased and was still under investigation.

Motsapi said that a case docket of murder was registered for further investigation, which led to the arrest of four suspects.

Refrain from taking law into own hands

The suspects will soon appear before Vereeniging Magistrate’s court facing charge of murder.

 The Acting Station Commander, Colonel Thapelo Mofokeng, urged community members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

He emphasised that community members should respect the laws of the country and allow the Criminal Justice process to take its course.

 Colonel Mofokeng further stated that both the police and the community share the responsibility of maintaining effective partnership policing and that when a suspect is apprehended by the community the police should be called to arrest the suspect and allow the criminal justice system to take its course.
