BOIPATONG.- The ActionSA in Sedibeng has requested the Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) together with MMC of Environmental Affairs to urgently intervene to the 24hrs continuous smoke emissions from Bishopville Landfill site that is adjacent to Boipatong and Cape Gate.

Bongani Dhlamini, ActionSA Sedibeng Regional Chairperson, said that the community of Boipatong and surrounding area are inhaling smoke 24hrs.

“This smoke reduces visibility on Noble Boulevard creating hazardous conditions for passing motorists. The municipality must ensure the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act compliance is implemented.”

If this is not corrected, we will escalate (forward the request) to high levels.

ELM spokesperson, Makhosonke Sangweni said that the fire department is attending to the situation.

“ActionSA is not going to fold arms looking at our people’s lives endangered. If this is not corrected, we will escalate (request) to high levels.”
