As the saying goes, ‘different strokes for different folks’. There are different things that make different people happy and everyone has their own way of defining happiness. A person needs to know what makes them happy but, I have come to realise, not so many of them actually do. This eventually leads to a conflict of self and the individual falling for anything they assume will bring them joy. Young people often fall victim to this dilemma because they seek happiness in the wrong places. Today’s youth find it a challenge to make the right decisions because they lack self-knowledge. This leads to confusion and the risk of ending up in bad company. It is so easy to be influenced in a group and it is well known that peer pressure has destroyed many lives. Young people, today, still suffer because they are not in control of their own destinies. The company that a person keeps usually determines their future and happiness. Being around good people helps to make someone a good person and vice versa. A person needs to be able to make their own decisions and not allow others to decide for them. Without taking the time to find out what really makes them happy, they are hardly likely to experience happiness. While everyone should go for what makes them happy, they may have difficulty if they are too concerned about pleasing others or seeking for approval. Life is too short to be unhappy, and life without happiness is sad. It is important to strive for happiness, no matter what it takes, if a person wants a fulfilling life. Laughter attracts joy and releases stress, so it is healthy to have a good laugh every now and then. Understanding oneself and knowing what makes you happy helps you to avoid unnecessary pitfalls. If something does not make you happy, it is probably not meant for you and there is no use in being someone that you are not. I believe in self-love and that one cannot love another without loving themselves. Love is also a pathway to happiness so it must be practised daily. Let us go for what makes us happy instead of living a life of regret.
