Pirates legend backs former club for Premiership League Title

Pirates and Sundowns are now tied with the same number of points and games, so the teams are now simply separated by goal difference.

SEBOKENG.- Former Orlando Pirates defender, Phiri Tsotetsi, is confident that his old club will be crowned Betway Premiership champions this season.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Tsotetsi said he believes that Pirates have what it takes to beat Mamelodi Sundowns.  ‘The Brazilians’ have dominated the league for the past 10 years, but Tsotetsi predicts that their time at the top is under threat.

The race for the trophy is heating up.

The Mighty Buccaneers are topping the log standing with 47 points after they beat Richards Bay in the Premiership League fixture on Wednesday.

Pirates and Sundowns are now tied with the same number of points and games, so the teams are now simply separated by goal difference.

Tsotetsi, who was part of the historic Pirates squad that won the CAF Champions League, believes the current team is the best in the league.

“I have been following the team and do not doubt that they are going to lift this trophy at the end of the season. They are doing very well at the moment, and you see their spirit is very high,” he said.

The Vaal-born legend was one of the best defenders who played alongside greats like Jerry Sikosana, John Moeti, Jabu Mnguni, Edward Motale, Mark Fish, Given Lane, Helman Mkhalele, Brandon Silent, and William Okpara.

“Look to win the league, they must play as a team, not as individuals. This was our biggest secret to success. We fought for each other in the field of play. It was all about a collective effort, and if they can do the same, they will be champions.”

While Pirates are often seen as “Cup Specialists,” Tsotetsi feels winning the league title would be a massive statement for the club.

He remains close to the team today as part of the Pirates Legends squad.
