Police dismiss social media warning about R59 intersection
Police in Kliprivier have dismissed a viral social media warning about hijackers using blue lights at the R59 intersection.
Kliprivier Police have dismissed a widely shared warning on social media about a hijacking at the R59 Kliprivier four-way intersection and off-ramp.
The online message claims that hijackers are using blue lights to trick motorists into stopping. It further states that suspects may use surrounding traffic or trucks to trap a vehicle, preventing the driver from escaping.
The post urged drivers not to stop for blue lights in isolated or quiet areas, advising them to put on their hazard lights and drive to the nearest petrol station or police station. Furthermore, the warning declared the R59 and Kliprivier off-ramps as high-risk areas.
Speaking to Ster North, spokesperson Sergeant Tintswalo Ndhambi confirmed that the information contained in the message is incorrect and not supported by any reported cases at Kliprivier SAPS.
Ndhambi cautioned members of the public against sharing unverified information, as this may create unnecessary panic within the community.
She reiterated that police continue to monitor all reported incidents and encourage the public to report any suspicious activity or crimes through official SAPS channels.
“For accurate information, the community is advised to rely on official communication issued by SAPS,” Ndhambi said.
