Health MEC unveils newly built Accident and Emergency Unit at Sebokeng Hospital
The facility has been redesigned to include functional, multidisciplinary workspaces that enable doctors, psychologists, social workers, and nursing staff to collaboratively manage patient care.
SEBOKENG.- The MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, officially unveiled a newly built Accident and Emergency Unit, along with a refurbished Male Mental Health Unit at Sebokeng Regional Hospital yesterday.
These developments, the department said, marked a significant milestone in strengthening the quality, accessibility, and responsiveness of healthcare services in the region.
“The renovation of the male psychiatry ward is a critical health priority, addressing longstanding infrastructural challenges, overcrowding, and the need to comply with stringent therapeutic standards outlined in the Mental Health Care Act.”

The upgrades include the replacement of outdated and flammable materials with specialised, fire-retardant infrastructure to significantly enhance patient safety.
“The project further aims to alleviate severe overcrowding, as the hospital continues to receive a high volume of mental health care users from across the Sedibeng district. To support holistic care and improved recovery outcomes, the upgraded unit now features dedicated spaces for therapeutic recreational activities and occupational therapy, which are essential in accelerating patient rehabilitation.”
In addition, the facility has been redesigned to include functional, multidisciplinary workspaces that enable doctors, psychologists, social workers, and nursing staff to collaboratively manage patient care in a safe, structured, and controlled environment.
“The newly built Accident and Emergency Unit represents a major investment in strengthening frontline emergency care. Designed to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times, the facility expands the hospital’s capacity to manage trauma and critical cases, ensuring that patients receive timely, lifesaving interventions in a safer and more efficient setting.”
