Lifesaver needs your support
Even a bag of cement will help make a difference.
THE Hibberdene community is pulling together to help Nhlanhla ‘Senge’ Mqadi, a lifesaver who had both his legs amputated after a hit and run incident on the toll road near Umzumbe in June.
The 17-year-old has been discharged from hospital and is now in the care of his family. A part-time lifeguard, Nhanhla was completing his schooling while supporting his family of six, ranging in age from just a year to the eldest of 27 years.
When the Lions Club of Hibberdene delivered food parcels to the Mqadi family residence recently, they noticed that the latrine was some 30 metres away from the homestead and the doorway of the house appeared too narrow to accommodate a wheelchair. The driveway to the house is in a bad condition and unsuitable for vehicles to enter the home and even more difficult for wheelchair access.
So far, Handy Hardware in Hibberdene has donated a basin, bath, toilet, paint and labour. They are appealing to the public to donate a geyser, hand rails, tiles, roofing, bricks and cement.
Nhlanhla’s uncle Temba, a builder, has already started building a bathroom with a septic tank, as well as making the home wheelchair friendly. Herald reader Joan Harrison also kindly donated a large bag of groceries to the family this week.
Those who would like to assist can contact Kerry Koekemoer at 039 6992363. Those who would like to visit Nhlanhla or his family, or who are able to assist the family financially, can contact them at 073 6207431 or 072 5987875.
Detective Warrant Officer Mark Manuel John of Southport SAPS appeals to anyone with information on the accident to come forward. He particularly appeals to panel beaters and spray painters who may have worked on an accident-damaged white Nissan Hardbody bakkie to contact him at 039 6819900 or 082 5579450.
