No road, but big plans

It's been an uphill battle to get any feedback from the municipality.

FOR two years Ken Mangaroo has been asking Hibiscus Coast Municipality to build a road to properties he owns in Sunwich Port.

He has also brought the matter to the attention of his ward councillor Tap Kruger. But despite all this nothing has been done.

Mr Mangaroo purchased his first house in March 2010, and a second property next door in June 2011. Access to both properties is blocked by long grass.

According to town plans there is supposed to be a road, called ‘Park Road’, in front of his house.

However, ‘Park Road’ is currently part of open ground in front of his house.

With limited road access, Mr Mangaroo is also unable to start building on one of his properties.

He said that when it rains he cannot use the entrance at all due to the ground being waterlogged. Open drains alongside the property requires pipes to be laid to prevent this.

On one occasion, he had to call a tow truck to pull his vehicle from the  mud.

When the Herald contacted Councillor Kruger, he said it was the first time this matter had been brought to his attention.

He explained that, at the moment, HCM was giving priority to storm disaster in rural areas, but said he would bring it up at the weekly roads department meeting.

“I will also forward it to the IDP to be incorporated in future planning,” he said.

Mr Mangaroo also wants HCM to give him permission to ‘adopt’ the park-like area in front of his properties so he can spruce it up.

He said he would keep the area maintained to stop it attracting a ‘bad element’.

He would love to enclose the area and transform it into a safe park where families could picnic and children could play.

Mr Mangaroo believes his vision would improve and transform the entrance to Sunwich Port.
