Honeymoon horror for newly-weds

The couple had only been married a few hours when they were killed in the crash.

THE couple in the white vehicle who died in the horrific accident on the toll road near Margate in the early hours of yesterday morning were newly-weds Ashlee (30) and Deepika (27) Reddy . The couple, married only a few hours before in an elaborate ceremony in Merebank, was on their way to their honeymoon destination when the tragedy occurred. Originally from Durban but living in Gauteng, Ashlee and Deepika planned to spend what should have been the happiest time of their lives at San Lameer. Their funeral takes in Durban, today (Tuesday).

The teenage boy travelling in the in the gold car, and who died at the scene has been named as Ernest van Rensburg (15). The Van Rensburg family, from Alberton, had been holidaying at the Lalanathi Caravan and Camping Park in Melville. Police spokesman Jay Naicker said a case of culpable homicide had been opened and police were investigating.

A HEAD-ON collision on the toll road (R61) near Margate last night has claimed the lives of three people and left one person in a critical condition. Netcare 911 paramedics together with various other medical services arrived at the scene and found the roadway obstructed by the crumpled remains of the vehicles. Some of the injured were still trapped in the twisted metal.

At this stage it is believed that the driver (30) of the white vehicle and his female passenger, are from Gauteng. Both died at the scene. The occupants of the gold vehicle are believed to be from Durban. The front seat passenger in the gold vehicle, a 15-year-old boy, died in the collision. At this stage, reports indicate that the driver of this vehicle was seriously injured and a passenger in the back seat was also injured. They were stabilised on scene and taken to hospital. Both vehicles were severely damaged. Police are investigating.
