A BATHER drowned while swimming at an unprotected beach in Anerley last Friday at about 1.15pm.
Police spokeman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Marlin Pursad (41) had gone out for a swim but got into difficulty.
She said there were no lifeguards and that it was not an official area for bathing.
Lt-Col Wiid confirmed that his body was retrieved by a member of the community. He was declared dead at the scene.
In other news, two people got into difficulty at Pumula beach on Monday this week, when currents swept them into deeper water.
Fortunately, other bathers were able to assist them. Lt-Col Wiid said they were taken to hospital for treatment as a result of excessive swallowing of sea water.
Lt-Col Wiid urged beachgoers to take extreme caution when entering the water.
“Strong rip currents are, in most cases, responsible for getting swimmers into difficulty. Rather swim at demarcated beaches where there are lifeguards,” she said.
