Drownings mar New Year celebrations
Two people died in separate drowning incidents on Tuesday.
A WOMAN and a child died in separate drowning incidents over the New Year period. On Tuesday this week, a two year-old boy drowned at a private residence in Uvongo. Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said paramedics arrived at the scene and found the child, unresponsive, at the side of the pool. “They immediately started advanced life support resuscitation and, after an extended resuscitation, they managed to get the boy’s heart beating again,” he said. The boy was taken hospital, but died later that day.
On the same day a woman, believed to be in her 20s, drowned in a pool at a complex in Shelly Beach at 10.49pm. Mr Botha said Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the woman lying next to the pool. “Paramedics immediately started advanced life support resuscitation, but despite all their efforts, she was declared dead at the scene,” he said.
On New Year’s Day, a three year-old survived a near drowning at St Mike’s, while another child escaped a near drowning at Port Shepstone tidal pool. A bather at Southport beach also had a close call.
