New Year accident leaves 11 dead

The accident involved a minibus taxi and a bakkie.

ELEVEN people died in a head-on collision on the R61 toll road near Ramsgate yesterday. Robert Mckenzie, spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Service, said a bakkie and a minibus taxi collided at around 9pm.

“Nine people died at the scene and several others were seriously injured. The injured were taken to Port Shepstone and Murchison hospitals, where two later died.” According to reports, a child was among those who died.

Emergency staff, from paramedics and firemen to police search and rescue personnel, worked together to free and treat the injured using the jaws of life. Both vehicles were severely damaged and traffic had to be diverted. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
