Paramedics offer advice

Take care and enjoy the rest of your holiday safely.

IN response to soaring drowning and vehicle accident statistics, Netcare Limited spokesman Chris Botha has appealed for caution over the rest of the holiday period.

According to Mr Botha, Netcare 911 paramedics all over South Africa have had their hands full since December 1. They have responded to 83 drownings and near drownings, 2 580 motor vehicle accidents and 427 pedestrian accidents.

He asked road users to take greater care. “Please slow down and increase your following distances. You and your passengers should wear your seat belts at all times. Keep your headlights on in low visibility. Be aware of people, particularly children, walking along the roadway as they could run across the road at any time,” he said.

He asked swimming pool owners to ensure their pools were secured with SABS approved nets when not in use. All pools should be fenced off to prevent children from accidentally falling in.

“Children should only swim under adult supervision. At the beaches only swim at designated areas where lifeguards are on duty. Don’t consume alcohol when you are going to swim,” he said.
