N2 crash claims lives

Three people, including a child, were killed in a 12 car pile up on the N2.

THE coast’s emergency services have had a busy 72 hours – if not on the land, at sea.

Thursday, November 10:

Unconfirmed reports have stated that 30 people were killed in an accident involving 12 cars on the N2 at Umzimvubu, near Mount Frere yesterday.

Police from the area have however stated that three people, including a child, were killed when a truck rammed into the cars.

It is alleged that truck, which was carry bricks, ploughed through 11 cars before it ended up on top of a bakkie, killing the driver and a child inside.

It is believed that the third victim was a pedestrian. An official statement is awaited from the police in the Eastern Cape.

 Friday, November 11:
* Three people sustained serious injuries in a crash on this morning when a bakkie and a car collided in Marine Drive, Oslo Beach.

Kwazulu Private Ambulance paramedics and other emergency services found that one person was trapped and had to be extricated.

Belinda Catchpole, spokesman for KwaZulu Private Ambulance, said two women and a man were stabilised on scene before being taken to various hospitals in the area.

* At 7.20am, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn to assist the local fishing charter boat Rip Tide, suffering motor mechanical failure to one of her two motors at the backline at Shelly Beach. There were nine crew on board.

Jeremiah Jackson, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, said they transferred three people and then another four onto the sea rescue craft in two shifts and brought them safely to shore.

“During the second transfer we stood by while the skipper and one crew member brought the boat safely onto the beach,” he said.

Wednesday, November 9:

The driver of a bakkie and his passenger were both injured in a crash on the R61 in the Ramsgate area on Wednesday.

Paramedics from Kwazulu Private Ambulance attended to the patients.

They were both stabilised and transported to hospital.

It appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then left the road.

Mrs Catchpole said that the vehicle came to a standstill against a tree, thus avoiding a plummet down the embankment.
