Update: Man arrested for Trafalgar teen murder

This Friday will mark a year since the Pretoria teen was murdered for her cellphone.

MARGATE detectives have made a breakthrough in the infamous ‘cellphone murder’, arresting a 33-year-old man allegedly responsible for the murder of Pretoria teenager Shayleen van Zanten (15).

Shayleen was stabbed to death a year ago,  on December 16, 2015.

At the time of the murder police issued an identikit of the man wanted and a reward was offered.

On Tuesday this week the man arrested was positively identified at an ID parade held at Margate SAPS by Shayleen’s friend, who was with her on that fateful day.

Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka said detectives had arrested three suspects on December 3. They were arrested by Captain Devrak Gopichand and Detective Sergeant Muthal-Sesiah Naidoo of Margate SAPS for housebreaking and robberies which occurred in Trafalgar during June, July and October last year.

A fourth suspect was arrested on December 5 at Ramsgate Court while attending another case of shoplifting.

The 33-year-old identified by Shayleen’s friend appeared in the Ramagste Court yesterday (Wednesday) on the murder charge. The case was postponed to Monday, December 19. The man remains in police custody.

The other three arrested are due to appear in court soon.
