Fidler in the Hood: Well done and good luck Suid-Natal Primary!
Needless to say, funds have to be found to send a representative squad from the South Coast.
GREETINGS. Back into the old routine and settling in rather easily, despite the plethora of potholes, water problems that never appear to be attended to and street lighting with a similar fate, life carries on pleasantly. Of course, the people down here make it worthwhile – our community spirit keeps smiling through.
Georgia On My Mind
After a movie at Shelly Centre last week, the CO and I noticed the waitrons (never liked that word) were all dressed in the same sky-blue school uniform at Georgia Spur.

I asked managers Amy Mardell and Danielle Moore what was going on and apparently the boys were pupils from Suid-Natal Primary, raising funds for a cricket tour.
Suitably impressed, I contacted the school and met with maths teacher Machiel Oosthuizen, deputy principal Donovan (‘Donnie’) Mulder and recently-appointed headmaster Callie Krog.
The trio, justifiably proud of their school and pupils, explained that a schools’ cricket tournament is held every second year and this year’s event is in Konka (near Rustenberg) in Northwest Province.
A selected group of aspiring cricketers and two teachers will be attending. The event does not solely cover cricket, but includes other sports like river rafting, super-slides and trail hiking.
Sponsorship required
Needless to say, funds have to be found to send a representative squad from the South Coast. Parents and teachers will hold a sponsored golf day and cake sales and pupils will raise funds by being ‘honorary waitrons’ at local restaurants.

The school needs further sponsorship, both from local businesses or individuals and any helping hands and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
It is quite apparent that the school is in good hands and teaching staff, proud parents and pupils are all pulling together. Last year I wrote about Willem Postma Primary from Bloemfontein and the exemplary behaviour of its pupils – this school falls into the same category.
We should be proud to have such fine young people in our midst. My comments back then that the ‘Beloved Country’ will ‘pull through’ remain the same and Suid-Natal Primary is truly ‘Proudly South African’. Good luck!
Manchester bombing
Talking of schools, old schoolmate Garry Daniels of Shelly Beach and my former school Chetham’s Hospital Grammar School in Manchester was ‘witness’ to the suicide bombing last week.
The school is situated in Hunts Bank, less than 200 metres from the scene of the attack (Manchester Arena/Victoria Station complex). As Garry recalled he used to buy his first packs-of-five Woodbine cigarettes at the newsagents opposite Victoria Station.
The 15th century school, founded in 1653, was built 200 years ago and was originally an abbey with stone walls ten foot thick! Even an atom bomb couldn’t shift those walls, so no real damage fortunately.
Though Garry would say, I’m sure, not even the ‘thwacks’ dished out to us on our ‘you-know-wots’ by teachers’ canes would have been able to stifle our yelps of pain through those walls.
Aren’t quiz nights such fun?
Finally, a bit of a quiz for you. Please decipher: ‘TYWB for reading this. IMHO, PPL are actually FWB. B4N we used to write ‘proper English’.
Nowadays, I tell you to HAND, LOL, and when you scratch your head puzzling this out, I’m ROTFLMAO. But WTF, just HAND. No worries, gotta go, PAW, TTYL, and LOL2U2.’ If you can translate this, you’re a better man than I am.
It was part of the recent Ramsgate Lions’ quiz night, when we ‘City Slickers’ became ‘City Slackers’, coming next-to-last. How the mighty have fallen! See you, Rob.
