Walter Pippan, who was asked to say a few words at the opening night of the gallery, said Umzumbe is a little gem.

“It’s beaches, surf, secure village atmosphere has attracted many people from far and near and overseas to settle her. One attraction are the many artists who are making a major impact on this little hamlet,” – Walter.

He then had the pleasure of introducing the exhibiting artists:

Grant Wood

Host, Grant Wood needs little introduction.

He is renown for his watercolor art throughout South Africa and internationally, having sold many paintings as far as the United States.

He is taking part in many art exhibitions and demonstrations in all parts of the country such as Greyton, Clarens, Hilton, Durban to permanent exhibitions and art workshops in Ramsgate.

He runs his own art workshops from  Art Escape Gallery in Pumula Woods, Umzumbe four times a year.

Trish was born of Italian parents and has always had a yearning to do an odd painting or two and used to copy art works that caught her fancy, until she was encouraged by husband, Grant to do original art.

She decided to take a number of workshops and learn a lot from Grant and other artists, and it didn’t take long for Trish to produce her own fantastic oil paintings. Her paintings have attracted sales as far as Greyton.

Her work is vibrant and her paintings suggest a mood of relaxation and peacefulness portraying the power of nature.

She also did a portrait course by accident and discovered she loved portraits too.

Daniela Gridseloff:

Daniela is from from Austria, and has settled in the farming area of Umzumbe.

She only started painting at the age of 54 when she came to South Africa. She studied art history and made her diploma for Art Appreciation, which created her admiration for world-famous artists Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso.

Laia Clavell

Friendly Laia is originally from Barcelona, Spain.

She has been living in Umzumbe for the last 11 years.

She does a variety of artwork from mosaic (which you can find examples on Umzumbe beach) to upcycling and restoring previously owned furniture – giving it new life using shweshwe and African designs.
