Synergy

Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: Feb 14 – 18

Billed as the most glamourous show of the year, Synergy heads for Durban this Valentine’s season, with Ian von Memerty and his wife, Vivienne hotting up the stage with their latest show.  The ‘King of Versatility’ and the ‘Queen of Dance’ explore glorious partnerships in this dance and comedy musical.

The von Memertys share the stage with respected keyboard maestro Roelof Colyn, who recently was in Durban for the hit musical revue, A Handful of Keys. Not allowing Colyn to have all the fun on the keys, Ian will be sharing time at piano!   Husband and wife take their journey of 26 years of life`s struggles and creative partnership and bring fresh insight into the Synergy that ignites when two people work as one. * Everything I Never Told You *

A Solo Exhibition by Bernice Stott

Artplus Gallery, uMhlanga: opens Thursday, Feb 1

Durban artist,  Bernice Stott, opens her new solo exhibition intriguingly titled, Everything I Never Told You, in Artplus Gallery in uMhlanga  on Thursday 1 February in which she considers a less obvious and opposing view of the female body using pen and ink drawings rendered on lightweight acid free paper, displaying both the front and the reverse side of the image.

The reverse side is more ethereal and mysterious than the ‘front’ view, presuming the ‘front’ view to be explicit. It is a resistant view in that the sensuousness of the body is subtle and the subject seems to have more ownership of how she wishes to be viewed, – considers Stott.

“The human narrative holds mystery for me and is at the centre of my work.  I am also intrigued by the female body in contemporary South Africa and social issues of the environment. Currently I am drawing and painting although photography has led me to into the media of video and performance art. Art making feeds my soul: it is a place of solitude yet it provides me with an engagement of both my internal and external life.

Everything I Never Told You will be on display at Artplus Studio 32 Gallery: 32 Solstice Rd, uMhlanga Ridge.  The gallery also retails art supplies, offers workshops and lessons and boasts a comfortable coffee shop.

* The Secret of Beads / Imfihlo Yobuhlalu*

Durban Art Gallery: now on

The SECRETS OF BEADS / IMFIHLO YOBUHLALU exhibition celebrates the richness of Zulu Culture represented by beadwork which has been collected by The Durban Art Gallery over a period of many years.  This is the first time it will be shown to the public.

The Director of The Durban Art Gallery Dr. M.M. Xakaza in his foreword to the catalogue, writes  “Curators Anthea Martin and Hlengiwe Dube have crafted this exhibition to highlight the fact that traditional Zulu society has never been monolithic in terms of their usage of body adornment as a form of cultural expression. Over a hundred items were selected from the Durban Art Gallery collection for their quality and as examples of beads from many of the areas in KwaZulu-Natal. The exhibition is accompanied by a full colour catalogue which documents each item. This is an essential aid for the understanding of each artefact. The English and Zulu name is given, with explanations of place, age, function and materials. The exhibition will have an educational component with lectures, workshops and a website for access by students.

The exhibition will close at the end of the day on Sunday 29 April 2018.
