Ugu District Municipality has purchased a new fleet of vehicles for its staff to use for water and sanitation call-outs.
The fleet of 43 vehicles includes nine double cab bakkies, as demanded by staff who downed tools recently, saying the single cab vehicles currently in use were ‘unsafe’.

South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) chairman, Mthandeni Ngcobo, welcomed the new vehicles, but added they awaited the addition of several more double cabs to the fleet, as agreed with Ugu management.
Ugu spokesman France Zama confirmed that a settlement had been reached between the municipality and its workers.
“Our operations are back to normal, with all workers committed to ensuring that municipal services are being rendered,” he said.
