Mother abandons baby and toddler in Malangeni area

The woman was arrested and faces charges of child abandonment.

Two children were abandoned in the Malangeni area last Friday, August 3 by their 24-year-old mother, who was subsequently arrested.

It was approximately 9.30pm that night when members of the Scottburgh Saps responded to a report of two children left by their mother, who had gone away to Umlazi in Durban.

“The mother, who lives in the Gumede Area, Sezela, had gone to Malangeni to the house of the man she claims is the father of the one-month-old and the three-year-old girls,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

“As he was not home, she left the children with his sister, who refused to look after them as she could not feed nor clothe them.”

On Tuesday, August 7 at 4pm, Detective Sergeant Nonkululeko Mgqibisa of the Umzinto Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS) and Detective Constable Dillon Khamisa of the Scottburgh Saps Detective Service arrested the mother in Umzinto.

She faces charges of child abandonment at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.

Police arranged for the toddler to be cared for at a place of safety while the baby was taken to GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh where she is being cared for.
