Life sentences handed down to ‘witchcraft’ hitmen

Thabani suspected Thembinkosi of killing some of his family through witchcraft, and decided to have him killed.

Convicted hitmen, Mpendulo Ndadane (30) and Lungisani Mbhele (24) were last week sentenced to lengthy jail terms in the Ramsgate High Court.

Judge Gregory Kruger sentenced the pair to life behind bars for the murder of Thembinkosi Jali and Bhekithemba Gwija, 10 years for attempted murder and 15 years for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Last year, a third man, Thabani Jali, pleaded guilty and was handed a 20-year sentence by the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Thabani suspected Thembinkosi of killing some of his family through witchcraft, and decided to have him killed.

He procured the services of Ndadane, who in turn recruited Mbhele to kill Thembinkosi.

On March 11, 2017, Thabani, Ndadane and Mbhele had waited nearby Thembinkosi’s home at Kwajali Location, near Nkungwini Ward until they saw him leave and walk toward the river.

They followed him and shot him several times.

He died at the scene.

Hearing the shots, members of the community gave chase.

The men opened fire on their pursuers, fatally wounding Gwija, and injuring three others.

Two of the men were arrested at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Siyabonga Ronald Cyril Gasa and his team from Harding apprehended Thabani the following day.
