Tournament director Peter Bircher told the Herald that this was the first time a local pair had won this tournament, that has been running more than 30 years under different titles. “It was first run by the doyen of South African bridge, grandmaster Petra Mansell under the name ‘The Wild Coast Tournament.’ Then, in the late ’90s, it was named in honour of local bridge expert Cyril Robinson, after which it became ‘The Wild Coast Sun 10 000.’ Three years ago we moved it back to Margate and named it The South Coast Open Pairs,” he explained.
“Bridge is the greatest competitive game there is. It has tremendous depth, and no matter how well you play you can always play substantially better.”
The tournament committee thanks the players for helping make it such an outstanding success. The winning pair was Magate’s Margie Bartlett and Shirley Barlow. In second place was Durban pair, Di Adrain and Roger Wilson with Frank Chemaly and Mark Oliff, also from Durban, taking third spot.
